A major East Asia craze sweeping Europe moved Johann Joachim Kaendler to produce countless figures of Asians in porcelain from the mid-1740s onwards, including some of Buddha. Renditions of the smiling Buddha are known in the Manufactory's own vernacular as "Pagods", with reference to where the deity is housed, or, indeed, as "nodding pagods" - they are, after all, special on account of their moving parts: their hands and head to be set in motion if gently nudged. The coloured detail after an idea by Meissen creative director Otto Drögsler incorporates motifs from a variety of painting styles and schemes from the Manufactory.
