Following the "Dragon of Good Fortune," designer Zhuoyu Hou introduces another important mythical creature from Chinese culture into the visual world of MEISSEN: the phoenix. The phoenix, known in Chinese as Fènghuáng, is regarded as a symbol of peace, harmony, and virtue. Revered as the noblest of all feathered creatures, it often appears together with the dragon. While the dragon embodies the masculine principle of Yang, the phoenix represents the feminine principle of Yin. Together, they symbolize harmony in marriage and in the universe. In China, the peony is celebrated as the queen of flowers. Yellow peonies are comparatively rare and stand for preciousness, dignity, and refined prosperity. Combined with the phoenix, the motif promises good fortune, wealth, and flourishing prosperity. At the same time, the color yellow was closely associated with the imperial court in ancient China and represented the highest dignity. The peonies appear on the vase from different perspectives and at various stages of bloom: from delicate buds and blossoms viewed from the side or back to flowers in full, magnificent bloom. Above this abundant sea of flowers, the phoenix appears to hover, while golden clouds unite the individual motifs in a harmonious composition. A distinctive feature of the vase is the combination of two traditional painting techniques. The phoenix is painted by Nicole Drigalla, an accomplished specialist in Indian-style painting, with precise linework and delicate ornamentation. The peonies, by contrast, are rendered in the tradition of classical flower painting by Ramona Kliemt and are distinguished by softly modelled forms, finely graduated color transitions, and a naturalistic appearance.
