description
This elegant vase recalls the celebrated Meissen palace vases inspired by East Asian models, which have ranked among the manufactory's most prestigious creations since the eighteenth century. Particularly distinctive is the cobalt-blue underglaze painting, one of the most important techniques in European porcelain art. The decoration is applied before glazing and then protected beneath a transparent glaze. This process creates the remarkable brilliance and depth of Meissen cobalt blue, preserving its radiance for generations.
With its sumptuous decoration, the vase forms a bridge between tradition and contemporary design. The combination of cobalt-blue underglaze painting and gold brocade decoration, a technique developed at MEISSEN® in 2012, lends the piece a distinctive character. The chinoiserie motifs after Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775) appear almost engraved into the surface. They originate from the so-called Schulz Codex, Höroldt's sketchbook of Chinese everyday scenes, which became one of the most influential sources for European chinoiserie.
As early as the 1720s, so-called "Gold Chinoiseries" adorned Meissen porcelain. The craftsmen of that period, many of them trained as silversmiths and enamellers, gilded the white surfaces, carefully engraved the motifs and polished them by hand. This historic tradition finds a contemporary interpretation in the present design.
The shimmering chinoiserie figures stand out against a background of matte 23-carat gold, complemented by the richness of cobalt blue. The result is a decoration of exceptional depth and elegance that unites the origins of Meissen porcelain art with a distinctly modern aesthetic.
