description
This sculpture depicts the renowned Lioness by the sculptor August Gaul, whose model was realized in Böttger stoneware in 1922. Gaul is regarded as one of the most important animal sculptors of the modern era. His works are distinguished by a clear and reduced formal language that captures the essence and character of an animal with remarkable precision. The Lioness embodies strength, serenity, and dignity, conveying a timeless sense of presence. The figure is executed in Böttger stoneware, the hard ceramic body developed by Johann Friedrich Böttger in the early eighteenth century and considered an important precursor to European porcelain. Its characteristic deep brown color and velvety surface lend the material a unique expressive quality, making it a highly valued medium for sculptural works for more than three centuries.
This particular sculpture has been reinterpreted through a contemporary gold decoration. Inspired by the visual language of international tattoo art, the design combines floral ornaments, mandalas, and figurative elements in a richly layered composition. Emerging from the ornamental structures, the image of a lion's head reinforces themes of strength and sovereignty while enhancing the majestic character of the figure.
The exceptionally delicate motifs, executed entirely by hand in gold, testify to the artist's extensive experience and outstanding craftsmanship. Their precision and complexity create a compelling dialogue with Gaul's restrained sculptural form. In this way, the sculpture bridges the tradition of Böttger stoneware and contemporary ornamentation, creating a striking encounter between classical sculptural art and a modern visual language.
