At the beginning of the 18th century, French engraver Jacques Callot created a unique picture book about the crippled dwarfs who romped around the courts at that time for the amusement of the noble ladies and gentlemen. In 1929, the great sculptor Paul Scheurich selected two of these characters and transformed them into porcelain figures for Meissen. In doing so, he removed their grotesqueness and gave them a cheerful dignity. Thus, Mlle Jolicoeur and M. Platfues, dressed in their baroque costumes, enthusiastically invite each other to dance.
