Butterflies flutter around fragrant flowers with their delicate wings. They alight on a flower-head for a brief moment before noiselessly drifting back off into the warm air of a summer's day. This is the kind of scene that appears before our eyes upon beholding the extravagant decoration on this vase. Brightly coloured butterflies and the odd insect, naturalistically painted, are at the centre of the action here, milling around lightly coloured flowers that have been decorated in a consciously low-key manner and with little variety of colour. Juxtaposing the romantic sweetness of the decoration is a classicist vessel in the shape of an amphora created in 1815.
